In order to reach Fussen, we have to take a car ferry from Constance across the river to Meersburg first. This is our family's first car ferry trip. We parked our car on the ferry and went up deck to catch the sea view. There were seagulls flying near to the ferry and Trisha loves to watch them fly. After we docked at Meersburg, it's road driving all the way to Fussen.
Fussen is actually one of the stops of the Romantic Route. This Romantic Route links a series of picturesque Bavarian towns and cities. It's not a road per se but rather a 353km route chosen to highlight many quaint towns and cities in western Bavaria. So in a town called Hohenschwangau, we settled in for the rest of the day. In this town is the famous Schloss Neuschwanstein and Schloss Hohenschwangau. Schloss Neuschwanstein is famous because it's the castle mostly used in jigsaw puzzles and also it is reputed to inspire Disney's Fantasyland castle. It was set within the mountains and we took a bus ride up, hiked a bit more to the castle entrance and took a guided tour of the unfinished castle. It was unfinished because the King Ludwig had died before it was completed. The view from the castle to the town of Hohenschwangau is really picturesque. Just like we're in a postcard.
It was a exhausting hike up and down the castle and we decided to just eat at the hotel's restuarant. Again we had authentic Bavarian food, roast pork with sauerkraut and bread dumpling. The bread dumpling wasn't that tasty though but the roast pork (not char siew!) was good. =) The best part of the meal was a chocolate cake as appetitiser. Yum!
